The Yorkshire Ripper Victims

Project type

The Yorkshire Ripper Victims

Date

March 2024

I'm currently researching the language and vocabulary used by the police and the media in connection with the Yorkshire Ripper victims. The research has taken me to Halifax and Leeds library to pore over 6 years of microfiche copies of the Evening Courier and Yorkshire Post.

I have also read the Sarah Everard case at length and draw comparisons in relation to the inquest findings of how misogyny and culture of the police hindered their investigations. In the case of the Yorkshire Ripper this culture lead to more innocent deaths of women.

In both cases there was an uprising of women who protested against the police and their treatment of the victims. It seems that in 30 years the police haven't learnt the lessons as both inquests hold similar views on the way these investigations were carried out.
